UIC Case Study: New Food Manufacturing Plant Installation

UIC was selected as the contractor to provide steel erection, installation of all equipment, production line, conveyors, electrical, and provide start up testing for a new Japanese food plant.

There were numerous challenges to this project. Construction was still in process by another company. For the core and shell portion of this project, the outside concrete was still being installed, and there were no loading dock ramps built to accommodate the delivery of equipment and materials into the building when it was time to mobilize.

Equipment was being delivered to the site, the schedule was behind due to the general contractor not being done by the time equipment was being delivered. The equipment needed to be moved into the building ASAP to prevent weather related damage and to achieve the schedule. So it was necessary for UIC to build a temporary loading dock to move equipment into the building.

The floors and walls were epoxied in key production areas for this food grade plant, which could not be damaged. So the floors had to be covered with plywood before UIC could bring equipment into the building. Critical installations in various rooms had been scheduled in UIC's team meetings so that start up testing could be done according to the schedule.

UIC identified the tasks necessary to complete the project, the time required with the owner, and created an expedited schedule to make up for lost time the other contractor had incurred in completing the core and shell portion of the project.

UIC met the owner's start up schedule, all equipment was installed properly, safely, and timely, and the plant was up and running sooner than the owner expected.
